Announcement of the Atari Jaguar Europe Festival 2014

The Atari Jaguar Europe Festival, "ejagfest" in short, takes place on November 15th and 16th of this year in Duisburg (near Düsseldorf), Germany. We celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Atari Lynx this year which has been released 25 years ago in 1989.

The Atari Jaguar Europe Festival is an annual festival for all Atari Jaguar and Lynx fans, developers and retailers. Open-minded fans of other video game systems are welcome, too.

The „Atari Jaguar Europe Festival is a meeting of retro gaming fans from all over Europe. The focus of attention is Atari and all consoles of the cult lable. All of you who would like to play again on systems like the Jaguar, Lynx, VCS 2600, 5200, 7800 or on a trusty homecomputer of the 80s, this is the right place.

Retro games, homebrew announcements / presentations, prototypes believed to be lost and demos of all kind can be experienced on the ejagfest. Developers from all over Europe regularly take the opportunity to present their new developments on the festival, and sometimes even have exclusive items for sale. Another highlight was the presentation of the only working “High-res Jaguar Virtual Reality Headset” in existence, which was shown for the first time in Europe on the ejagfest in the year 2007.

Competitions such as “Club Drive” or “Kasumi Ninja” make sure everyone has a fun time. Next to these fun competitions, the official European championship in “Checkered Flag” for the Lynx is taking place each year. To make the event complete there are retro game retailers to offer Jaguar/Lynx titles and a variety of other retro games and systems.

Jaguar Hockey Legends 2013 (JHL13)

----------------------------------

by Fredifredo of Jagware (ROM file analysing, experimenting, roster updating, testing)

and GGN of Reboot (editor programming, minor ROM file analysis)

About

-----

JHL13 is a hack of the very famous unreleased Jaguar game Brett Hull Hockey. This version features:

- Up to 32 players for teams

- new graphs

- Player Stats for 2011-12 season

- Hockey Legends players

- about 800 players with personal stats

- development started in January 2012, NHL Rosters updated up to 13th April 2013

- last player added: Jean-Gabriel Pageau of Ottawa

As most people know the game is playable but not 100% (there are some known bugs that can crash the game for example). What we did was maintain the compatibility while stretching the game engine as much as we could.

A huge chunk of work was done by Fredifredo alone, with a hex editor: he had to decipher a lot of tables and values, then make some changes to the ROM, uploading it to Skunkboard, testing... This was done a LOT of times until the game's patterns were deciphered.

Near the end of 2012, Fredi announced his ROM to Jagware and GGN started making an editor to speed up the process of editing a team. In the process, the team rosters were enhanced (originally it wasn't possible to add more players to one team, and a replaced player's name could not be bigger than the original one), a BPEG injector was developed (so you can replace a lot of the game's assets) and some other bits. The editor, as like with this ROM, is available from http://reboot.atari.org.

In closing, we hope you enjoy this release and stay tuned for more!

Last couple of months have been busy for Reboot, so here's a small recap of what's been released:

qUaKe, the qUICK uTIL aLLOWING kOLOSSAL eXHIBITIONS is a simple picture display viewer that combines 640x480 pictures. They are BPEG packed so lots can fit in a single 2 or 4mb ROM. Full source code and generator program are available, so there's no excuse - you can all create your custom shows now!

rmac and rln is a continuation of Landon Dyer and Alan Pratt's MADMAC assembler/ALN linker and Subqmod's smac/sln suite. On one hand running dosbox to assemble code isn't productive, and on the other hand we found a few bugs in smac/sln and it was a chore working around them. So, with Shamus (of Virtualjaguar fame) leading the attempt and quite a few people chipping in, we're trying to make a fast and reliable Jaguar assembler for modern machines!

Tripper: to quote the Atariage release thread:

Can 3 minutes and 34 seconds of audio and 23 320x240x256 colour pictures be compressed into a 4MB ROM? After a couple of days of fiddling around, the answer is "yes"!

We were really deeply touched that a song has been written specifically about the Atari Jaguar (by Tripper Getem here), so we figured that the best we could do was to put it in a ROM and juxtapose some pictures to depict the song's lyrics. We used the ADPCM CODEC for the audio, and we think it's a good compromise for compression vs quality.

But wait, it gets better! Not only we want to share the resulting ROM with you (attached in this post), we also went ahead and released the source code for it, so everyone can make a ROM with the song of their liking and pictures of their own!

So feel free to grab the ROM and enjoy this unique piece of music!

(P.S. the timings are spot-on on real machines. For emulators YMMV!)

Operation AC-2012 (the gaming-in-space trip)

Our launch base has already been attacked last February. Fortunately, during the epic MGC 2012 battle, our valorous steel defenders have successfully thwarted our enemies' attacks.
Hence, the following launch of our RGC-2K12 rocket was flawless, and it is right now traveling in the Pixellated Way towards the Retro Moon.

We must now closely monitor its trajectory, and to that end the Retro-Gaming Connexion organization has established a command center.
To maximize our chances of success, we offer our cherished 80s-90s-era gaming computers the opportunity of joining our AC-2K12 base on April 14th and 15th, in order to be involved in the control of this space-time travel, in a friendly and festive atmosphere.
As usual and since 2006, there will be numerous specific sections. We will turn this trip into an unprecedented adventure with the help of Acorn, Commodore, Amstrad, Atari, MSX, Sinclair, Oric, Thomson and other brand machines.

The operation will take place from 10 AM on April 14th (Saturday) to 4 PM on April 15th (Sunday) in the Congis-sur-Thérouanne salle des fêtes (entertainment center).

Planned events:

- Game programming contest (speed-coding party ; details here)
- Four-player Medieval Mayhem tournament on the Atari 2600.
- Freeplay areas with numerous machines available.
- A sales/trading area for everyone.
- Meals available on location, unlimited beverages (not included in the entry fee, on prior notice only)

As such an ambitious operation requires meticulous preparation, this convention is exclusively registration-based.
Entry fees : €11 for Saturday only - €9 for Sunday only - €17 for both days ; women and children under 12 are entitled to a 50% rebate.
If you would like to attend (with or without bringing your own hardware), please use the online registration form below to tell us about your need and wishes.

Originally known as the Jaguar Connexion and launched in 2002, the convention was initially just a gathering of a handful of Atari enthusiasts. Five editions later, it became the AC, to include all machines - consoles and computers - of the wide-known brand. Users, collectors, and other interested people now gathered during a yearly event. In the following years, the AC has been including other brands to offer the attendants an always unique experience.

About the Retro-gaming Connexion organization
Founded in 2004 by six retrogaming enthusiasts with diverse abilities and origins (consultant, multimedia teacher, pool technician), this non-profit organization's goal has always been to promote human gatherings. The successful conventions of the past years have turned the RGC organization into a well-known retrogaming partner in France. Today, with its strong membership of 11 persons, the organization has acquired a wide range of competencies, ranging from holding conventions (AC and RGC) to offering weekly computer training sessions, from packaging design to videogames production.

If you're a coder, graphic artist or music composer on 80-90s computers or consoles (8-, 16- or 32-bit), as a member of a crew or just for the challenge of creating a game on a given theme during one-and-a-half intense days, you'll probably be interested in this.

For those who are not already familiar with it, the AC is a convention dedicated to gaming on 8/16/32-bit computers, and will take place in France at Congis (near Paris). Events will include software and hardware projects presentations, a gaming tournament, free play and exhibition of all machines from iconic brands. For the 4th year now, the AC has included a game-creation speed-coding contest, and been witness to the birth of ambitious projects. A new challenge for 2012 is approaching.

This year, the theme will be : "a music-based game".

You can of course choose to create a purely musical game such as Dance Dance Revolution or Guitar Hero, but you can as well unleash your imagination as long as your game is based on music. For example, what about a shoot-em-up were you would collect musical scores fragments to build a song?

As usual, to make things interesting, a final element you'll have to take into account will be revealed just before the start of the contest.

For any questions, don't hesitate to contact me (Jeffrey) at

http://www.retro-gc.org/

To conclude, here are the speed-coding contest rules:

• This coding contest's aim is to create a game on your preferred platform, on a given theme.

• The contest will last from 9 AM on Saturday to 3 PM on Sunday.

• There are no technical restrictions, your game can be as small as 4 KB or as large as 16 MB (or more), on whichever platform you like. No categories : all entries will be competing against each other.

• We may ask the author(s) to show and present their entry on stage using the video projector.

• All game elements - code, graphics, sound and music, etc. - must have been created either by the contestant(s), or under a license that allows them to be used legally (public domain, Creative Commons, etc.)

• After the end of the contest, all productions may be featured and redistributed on several media, such as a commemorative video DVD, websites like scene.org and pouet.net, etc.

• Only a single entry per crew (or person) will be accepted.

• The game must be new, i.e. not released before the contest.

Good luck !

Preview of the festivities:

- New games demonstrations: you'll have the opportunity to try out the latest homebrew or semi-pro releases on your favorite machines.

- Contests: join the current-day gladiators and maybe become the retro-gaming champion.

- Quizzes: test your knowledge and compete against the best video game gurus.

- Sales/trading: as always, a large area will be devoted to it.

Fueled by the same dedication that has been defining it for ten years now, the Retro-Gaming Connexion organization will once more be present to fulfill your expectations, and make those two days a moment of sharing and happiness.

We are eager to welcome you into our retro and alternative-gaming arena. Sharpen your gamepads, they'll be your swords during this weekend.
